(September 10, 2009) - Transportation Staff were recognized in a special program on September 2 at Woodside High School.

2009 Driver of the Year
Dorothy Williams
This award honors the driver who emulates the very best attributes of Newport News Pupil Transportation.
Dorothy has outstanding attendance, dedication to her kids, and commitment to fellow drivers. She has 23 years of service with Newport News Pupil Transportation and has received safe driving awards for 20 years. Throughout her career, she has been the example of the song, "Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand, Make This World a Better Place If You Can." She loves animals, traveling, and is always planning for her next cruise. She also enjoys bowling, any kind of card game, and baking. |

2009 Assistant of Distinction
Verna Easter
Verna has 12 years on the Newport News Team. She is truly a mobile classroom teacher for her children. She loves her job, loves caring for her student riders, and her students love her.
Verna has two children and three grandchildren. She loves church, family outings, and the mall. |

2009 Rookie Assistant of the Year
Rutha Williams
Rutha joined the Newport News Team in August 2004. She loves to travel and has lived in places like San Diego, California, but she loves Virginia. Her favorite saying is "If it ain't broke, don’t fix it."
Rutha loves taking care of her friend’s dogs as well as her own Pomeranian named Miss Rose. She hails from Sanford, Florida. |

2009 Rookie Driver of the Year
Jeff Long
Jeff has inspired thousands of teenagers, not only as a bus driver but also by serving on the staff of Tri-Cities Workcamps for over 20 years. He won first place in the local Bus Road-e-o, placed second at the State Road-e-o and represented NNPS at the National Road-e-o.
Jeff is a bowler and avid fisherman. He is a man of many talents, as he plays keyboards, acoustic guitar and sings Gospel and Country Music. He is a regular performer at Donk’s Lil Ol' Opry Theater in Matthews County, and has released a CD of Contemporary Christian Music titled "Saved By Grace." |

2009 Top Wrench Award
James Altizer
This year’s winner has been a mechanic with Newport News Public Schools for over six years. From day one, James has had a positive impact on our operation. He does whatever it takes to keep the wheels rolling. He built over 1,100 tires last school year. When it comes to making quick pit stops for new rubber, he’s the man to depend on!
James likes to watch NASCAR events and Pittsburg Steelers games. In his off time, he enjoys the company of his children and grandchildren. Bowling is one of his favorite past times that he now shares with his 4-year-old grandson. |
