In The NewsCongratulations to the 2009-2010 teachers of the year (May 6, 2009) - Newport News Public Schools is proud to announce the divisionwide, elementary, middle and high school 2009-2010 Teachers of the Year. Selected by their colleagues, these teachers represent the best Newport News has to offer students.
Dr. Marjorie A. Wallace is a 7th grade science, college education, and AVID teacher at Huntington Middle School and is the Middle School and Divisionwide Teacher of the Year. Putting down deep roots at Huntington, she tailors classroom lessons for a variety of learners and coaches other teachers. She is nationally board-certified, and even has a medical degree – which could explain her holistic and hands-on approach to education and community involvement. Dr. Wallace has also planted herself firmly in the community. She lives ten blocks from the school where she teaches. She’s an active music minister in a church that is also close to home. Dr. Wallace volunteers at a couple of other nearby sites, helping serve food to senior citizens and needy people, working at a homeless shelter, and reading to youngsters at the local library.
Robin Ebaugh, who teaches kindergarten at Richneck Elementary School, has more than 20 years of teaching experience. She is nationally board-certified, and started Richneck’s Achievers R Leaders service organization, which gets students involved in volunteering in their school and community. The group is busy with recycling and food bank collections, in addition to working in the school library. Ms. Ebaugh says her philosophy of teaching can be summed up in two words: high expectations, which begin in kindergarten but shape a student for life. Ebaugh has high expectations for herself as well, and as a teacher shapes her lessons to her learners’ preferences. She wants her pupils to be as well-rounded and versatile as she is.
Margaret "Meg" B. Wiggins teaches earth science at Woodside High School but sees herself as part of a complex educational ecosystem. She teaches ninth-graders, but also mentors novice teachers, helping them find nourishing support systems in their work environments. She is active in the community as a science fair judge and Cub Scout volunteer. Ms. Wiggins sees a lot of similarities between stand-up comedy and teaching, which she started at age 10, when she helped others learn the art of ceramics. She was a research scientist for Roche Pharmaceuticals before switching careers in 1992. Wiggins sees teaching as a work in progress. Her motto: "If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right."
