Hines Middle School opens student-run credit union
Students at Hines Middle School can now bring the contents of their piggy banks to school to open credit union savings accounts."Spartan Student Credit Union" officially opened at Hines Middle School in Newport News last week. It will be open 9:30 to 10 a.m. each Tuesday.

Local Students Spend Spring Break at the Shipyard
Newport News public high school students participated in the Career Pathways job shadowing "Spring Break - Make it Work" program held on April 5-6. The goal of the program was to pair high school students with local companies offering job shadowing opportunities during the spring break holiday.

Building a Seaworthy Partnership
Skills curriculum taught in grades six to eight. Students have become familiar with many professions and trades and have learned that they have the ability to join this industry. This all-out effort to become part of the school has led to significant motivation on the part of students to participate in the Career Pathways initiative and has encouraged students to master the essential skills emphasized in the Northrop Grumman Career Readiness Skills curriculum.

Newport News high school students can experience a real-life work place
Applications are being taken now for Newport News high school students who would like to learn about work experiences at local businesses and organizations during spring break. A program called Spring Break: Make It Work will pair students with workplaces during the break, which is April 4-8. Students may participate one or all of those days. The deadline for application is March 23.

Saddle Club introduces students to riding world
Farm animals aren't a common sight in Newport News, but a new program has them becoming a regular part of school for some Huntington Middle School students. A new saddle club that's part of the Newport News Public Schools' Career Pathways program is introducing youngsters to caring for and riding four-legged friends.

Boys & Girls Club opening new center, focusing on careers
In between playing table tennis, pool and foosball, managers of the new Crossroads Village Boys & Girls Club location want members to learn about careers. The new 10,000 square-foot building on Nettles Drive, which opened this week, is also the home to the Workforce Development Center and Career Café.

Will yard ownership affect civic work?
Richard Boutwell, Northrop's Apprentice School's training manager, coordinates the Career Pathways partnership with Newport News schools, one of several educational initiatives the company is involved in. Boutwell said he's optimistic that whatever happens with company ownership, the Career Pathways partnership will continue. Ann Ifekwunigwe, the Career Pathways coordinator with Newport News schools, said Northrop has the most extensive relationship compared to any of its business partners. The program includes job shadowing, internships, career fairs and other programs.

Shipyard hopes to home-grow employees
Newport News Shipbuilding and school district partner to teach students about careers and job skills. In a sense, self interest is behind a partnership between Newport News Shipbuilding Corp. and Newport News Public Schools. Newport News Shipbuilding executives want "home-grown employees," said Richard Boutwell, the company's director of curriculum and development. The shipyard projects a need for more than 15,000 new employees in the next seven years.

Kindle lights fire in virtual business class
Shelby Ayers enrolled in a virtual business class in hopes of learning management skills she can later use to run her own restaurant. There was just one problem —the Warwick High School senior wasn't looking forward to all the reading it would require. But instead of a pile of books, she and her 20 classmates were assigned Kindles, slim, 10-ounce, tablet-sized electronic readers developed and sold by Amazon.com.
